If Shawn offers you a potato, don’t take the toxic tuber! Just trust ML, Marc and special guest Brian Robillard on that. Shawn also gets us caught up on the latest from Detroit Lions training camp, where Hulk Hogan got a chilly reception.

STRAIGHT DOPE

Please join ML on Saturday, Aug. 3 at the Cadieux Cafe, where The Smiths United will perform in the beer garden. Get your tickets here to find out whether ML will wear his kilt again. (Spoiler alert: It will cost you a beer to find out whether he’s wearing anything under it.) Get your tickets here.

With the Olympics underway, ML, Marc and Shawn tried to get Devin Scillian, Dave Birkett and Dan Wetzel to zoom in to talk about their time in Paris. Listen and learn why ML thinks the trio blew them off.

Marc launches a discussion of the purported Drag Queen version of The Last Supper which helped kick off the Olympics, but really wasn’t a parody of The Last Supper. Marc explains why he thinks it’s a grift. Which prompts Shawn to bring up ML’s recent social media beef with a troll who doesn’t think the Fab Five were grifters.

Brian Robillard, guitarist and occassional lead vocalist of the Common Scolds, sits in to discuss Lawlapalooza V, a music festival which will be held Friday Aug. 2 at the Magic Bag. Derek Kevra of Fox 2 will once again host the extravaganza, which features a strong man and raises money for the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. Find out more here.

ML shared emcee duties with Derek a couple years ago, leading to a “believe-it-or-not” moment that Brian, a proud U-M grad, recalled fondly.

ML recalls the other memorable moment of the night, when he found out that personal injury lawyer Mike Morse may win, but he doesn’t have a great sense of humor.

Shawn rushes from Detroit Lions training camp in Allen Park to Red Shovel Network HQ to share how he finally got to chat with Dan Campbell. Tune in and find out what Shawn and the Lions head coach has in common (hint: You won’t believe it!)

Shawn says Hulk Hogan attended Lions camp, only to get the cold shoulder from boxing champ Claressa Shields and most of the Lions players. He explains why, with help from Marc.

ML, with unwarranted confidence in his abilities as a mimic, does a Hulkster imitation. Then he wonders what it would be like if Shawn and Dan Campbell or Hulk Hogan changed bodies in a Freaky Friday switch.

Marc, Shawn and ML discuss the absence of sports figures as political commentators. They wonder aloud why icons like Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Tom Brady didn’t follow in Muhammad Ali’s footsteps … and offer some possible explanations.

Marc gives the Associated Press partial credit for debunking a JD Vance myth involving a couch, a glove and self love, leading Shawn to discuss a former roommate’s romantic encounters with tubers. Talk about sour cream!

DJ Weiser’s suggestion for Room 7609 inspires a full-blown debate over the merits of Van Halen, Def Leppard and a host of other banks that Marc loves, but ML considers lightweights compared to his heavier metal favorites. Amazingly, ML and Shawn find common ground.

Marc suggests that ML is fixated on the failures of U-M athletic department figures while glossing over the foibles of his Spartans. ML disagrees, pointing out his well-documented concerns about Mel Tucker, and reminisces about the time he witnessed steroid user Tony Mandarich roaming the sidelines while ML worked as a photographer for the college paper.

GEEK OF THE WEEK
This week’s geek is NOT Warde Manuel. It’s the judges who honored the U-M athletic director. Listen as ML makes his case over objections from Marc and Shawn.

ROOM 7609
DJ Weiser unintentionally sets off a Battle Royale by suggesting Extreme’s “Beautiful Girls.” Send us your favorite deep cut or obscure band – and a story about them or why they mean something to you – by writing to [email protected].

FEEDBACK
Hannah does NOT like JD Vance. Fellow Ohioan Marc offers some insights on their home state. We welcome all your comments – and constructive criticism – at [email protected]
