• THE STRAIGHT DOPE: The boys had a plan for this week’s show. They really did! But what started out as a recap of Marc and Shawn’s visit to the East Side for a photo shoot at the Alger Theater quickly devolves into a long — but well-told — story about the time ML had to pick up a box of dongs for his dad.
• In a “ain’t life grand” observation, ML notes that the same lawyer who sued his dad later represented ML in a lawsuit against Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.
• ML invites listeners to join him at Clark Park in southwest Detroit on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. as he leads a team against Lawrence Tech alumni in a friendly outdoor hockey game — weather permitting.
• “The Newsman” discusses facial hair, interacting with the public and why it’s better for him NOT to be recognized.
• Marc asks ML to reflect once again on his separation from Fox 2, prompting ML to touch on an unfinished story about Bob Carmack, the nemesis of Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, and his finished but unaired annual “Year in Review” story. The conversation includes ML’s explanation for his aversion for news choppers, how the band U2 got its name, and the time ML declined to get in a chopper to cover a story about a chopper crash.
• The lost “2019 Year in Review” package included updates on stories ML did about a retired state senator who used campaign funds to buy furniture for a campaign office even though he was no longer running for office, a family court judge accused of covering up the abuse of her grandchildren, and the house of skank owned by a Detroit city councilwoman.
• During the discussion of the tragically unaired “Year in Review” package, a zen-like ML reflects on how a change at Fox 2 that aimed to narrow his horizons instead broadened them. And Marc detects a common thread in ML’s encounters with reluctant public officials.
• THE GREAT DEBATE: Who is the best college football coach in Michigan? Is it the guy who gets all the money and the attention and the recruits — or the guy who got all the results? Marc kicks off the conversation with a surprising write-in candidate. In a rare twist, ML and Shawn seem to end up on the same side.
• GEEK OF THE WEEK: As someone struggling to grow a goatee, ML has a newfound respect for the hirsute. Nevertheless, a man with one of the most robust ‘staches in Washington can’t escape GOW honors due to the impeachment hustle he’s running.
